I just heard from a friend here at work that there's a new version of The Forever War by Joe Haldeman, slated for release mid-February, and our conversation reminded me how writing is a sum that's greater than its parts. The Fix posted a review of the September 2008 issue of Ideomancer, which contains my short story, "Mother of Exiles."

I've got to say that it's a good way to start the week. It's a nice review, and they definitely got what I was trying to do with the story. :-)

Just when I started to think I was a lone voice out in the wilderness, I saw a posting by Leah about Rich Horton's summary of the 2008 Ideomancer.

Congrats to the editorial team. It was a pleasure. I was quite happy "Mother of Exiles" found a home. :-)

In no particular order, the highs of the vacation were ...

1) the food
2) the service
3) relaxing with the family at magic shows, comedy shows, and juggling acts
4) coming home to nearly 1,500 emails (mostly spam) and finding one from the publisher at Ideomancer, informing me my short story "Mother of Exiles" is scheduled to appear in September's ( Read more... )

Finished my first pass on tightening and streamlining "Mother of Exiles" and I've got it down to 6,500 words. Waiting on edits from Ideomancer and comments from writing group on ways they believe I can tighten it down further.

No idea as to when the story will come out. Maybe this coming quarter, maybe next. Looking forward to seeing it out.

Latest on the rejection and submission front was a quick fairly quick reply from Mike Allen, passing on "Mother of Exiles" for Clockwork Phoenix. Now it's on its way, testing the waters over at Ideomancer.

The rewrite, modified title and all, is off to Interzone, electrons burning through the ether. I feel good. It's not often that you get to write a Libertarian SF story. With Nazis. And Descartes. And incest.
